Paving a Path for Future Healthcare Providers

The students in the pre-med club at East Brunswick High School were treated to a visit and presentation by Dr. Changmin Duan on Tuesday, February 8, 2011.

A successful and well respected optometrist and professor at SUNY College of Optometry, Dr. Duan dropped by after school and delivered a speech about pursuing a career in the healthcare field to students interested in becoming doctors and other healthcare professionals. She presented on such varied topics as the studies necessary to advance to a career in healthcare, the prevalence and employment statistics of healthcare professionals in the United States today, and the specific attributes, maintenance, and drives required to practice optometry in a professional setting.

Furthermore Dr. Duan discussed her personal experiences growing up in a practitioners' society in China, taking up residency in a hospital and working the late night shifts in the emergency room, and establishing herself as a venerable member of the healthcare community. Afterwards, she held a brief Q&A session, wherein she answered the students’ queries concerning eye care and hard contact lenses (specifically Orthokeratology lenses).
